Important Health Warning About Playing Video Games

Photosensitive Seizures

A very small percentage of people may experience a seizure when exposed to certain visual images, including flashing lights or patterns that may appear in video games. Even people who have no history of seizures or epilepsy may have an undiagnosed condition that can cause these “photosensitive epileptic seizures” while watching video games.

These seizures may have a variety of symptoms, including lightheadedness, altered vision, eye or face twitching, jerking or shaking of arms or legs, disorientation, confusion, or momentary loss of awareness. Seizures may also cause loss of consciousness or convulsions that can lead to injury from falling down or striking nearby objects.

Immediately stop playing and consult a doctor if you experience any of these symptoms. Parents should watch for or ask their children about the above symptoms—children and teenagers are more likely than adults to experience these seizures. The risk of photosensitive epileptic seizures may be reduced by taking the following precautions: Sit farther from the screen; use a smaller screen; play in a well-lit room; and do not play when you are drowsy or fatigued. If you or any of your relatives have a history of seizures or epilepsy, consult a doctor before playing.

Precautions to take during use

  • Sit a good distance away from the monitor.
  • Avoid playing if you are tired or have not had much sleep.
  • Make sure that the room in which you are playing is well lit.
  • Rest for at least 10 to 15 minutes per hour while playing a video game.

How to Play

Journey through the realms of Bricksburg, Flatbush Gulch, Cloud Cuckoo Land and a bunch of others that don’t need to be mentioned…

Whatever you do, make sure to keep this instruction manual handy at all times - it tells you how to fit in, have everybody like you and always be happy!

Hubs

There are four hub worlds in The LEGO Movie Videogame, which you may explore between levels.

To find the start of the next level and continue the story, follow the green stud trail when in a hub.

You'll return to the hub after completing each level. To return to the hub during a level, select Return to HUB from the in-game Pause menu.

Side Missions

You'll meet characters in hub worlds who will give you side missions. Complete them to earn Red Bricks.

Levels

The LEGO Movie Videogame is split into levels, accessible from the different hub worlds.

The first time you play a level, you do so in story mode. Some areas will be out of reach and you will only have access to a limited cast of characters. Return to the level in free play mode to explore hidden areas using different characters.

Free Play

Once you have completed a level in story mode, you can replay it in free play mode using any of the characters you have unlocked so far.

You can use different characters to access areas that were previously inaccessible and find collectibles you missed the first time round.

7

Characters

You'll unlock new characters as you play through the game.

Different characters have different abilities. If you find that you can't perform an action or reach an area with one character, try switching to another.

Custom Characters

Once you have reached Cloud Cuckoo Land, you can create your own custom characters to use in free play mode.

You'll find the character creator across the rainbow LEGO bridge in Cloud Cuckoo Land (although you might have to use Unikitty to smash a way through first!)

Changing Characters

To change characters, hold the U key to bring up the character wheel. Highlight the character you want to use, then release the U key to switch to that character.

In free play mode, select the Add Character icon (“+” sign) from the character wheel to bring up the character grid, which lets you switch to any of your unlocked characters.

You can also change between active characters quickly by “tagging” them. To do so, tap the U key to quickly change to the nearest playable character.

Multiplayer

Everything is cool when you're part of a team! You can join up with a friend to play The LEGO Movie Videogame in two-player splitscreen mode. That double-decker couch would come in handy right about now…

How a second player joins the game depends on whether they are using a gamepad or a keyboard.

Joining using a gamepad

Before starting the game, make sure the gamepad is connected to your computer. Press any button on the gamepad during play to activate Player 2.

Joining using a keyboard

Press the F2 key during play to activate Player 2.

NOTE: If pressing the F2 key has no effect, you may need to change your keyboard's default settings. For instructions on how to do this, please see When I press the Function keys (F1-F19) nothing happens. How do I use the Function keys? in the FAQs.

Collectibles

There are a number of different items to collect in The LEGO Movie Videogame. Build, break and bust your way into every nook and cranny to find them all!

LEGO Studs

You’ll find LEGO studs scattered across every level and hub world. Destroy LEGO objects to reveal even more studs!

If you collect enough studs in a level, you’ll be awarded the status of “The Special” and earn a gold brick.

Use LEGO studs to purchase new characters and red bricks.

Instruction Pages

You'll need to collect instruction pages to complete builds in many levels.

There are also instruction pages to collect in the hub worlds: find all the pages and you'll be able to construct a LEGO object at the construction platform in that hub and earn a red brick!

Gold Manual Pages

There are five gold manual pages hidden in each level. Find them all to unlock an item to build in the bonus room.

After completing the story mode, you can enter the bonus room by going to any of the hub worlds and stepping into the multicolored portal, then selecting The Bonus Room.

Red Bricks

There are 20 red bricks to collect across the hub worlds. Once you've found a red brick, you can purchase it using LEGO studs and it will unlock a helpful gameplay effect. Once purchased, you can activate or deactivate a red brick's effect from the Extras menu, accessible from the in-game Pause menu.

Gold Bricks

Earn gold bricks by completing levels, collecting tons of studs, finding gold manual pages, unearthing new pants and just being really awesome at the game!

Pants

There's a spiffy new pair of pants for your characters to wear hidden in each level.

You won't always be able to find the pants the first time you play through a level: replay levels in free play mode using different characters to explore new areas and uncover the precious pants.

There are Dispantsers located in each hub world: use them to change into different pairs of pants.
